What is Wilderness Discovery?

Wilderness Discovery Centre (WDC) is a not-for-profit Corporation run by a Board of Directors with representatives from the Thunder Bay Rotary Clubs, the Hill City Kinsmen, Handicapped Action Group Incorporated (HAGI) and the Shebandowan Campers Association. Our corporation operates a three season fully accessible resort situated on Lake Shebandowan, approximately 80 km west of Thunder Bay. Our facility provides barrier free accommodations for individuals with disabilities and their families, as well as seniors, veterans, first responders, non-profit groups, corporate retreats, family reunions, and gatherings. If you would like further information you may contact (807) 346-9722 or visit Wilderness Discovery Centre

Accessibility

How is Wilderness Discovery made accessible?

The facility has five cabins and two apartments which are completely accessible, from the kitchens and washrooms to the living areas and exterior decks accessed by ramps built to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) specifications. The facility features a ramp system which allows access from the upper portion of the property down to the waterfront. Our facility allows these individuals to be able to enjoy the outdoors, as well as go boating, fishing, and swimming in the lake.

Subsidized & Free Camping Opportunities

Without accessible accommodations like ours, opportunities to experience these activities are virtually nonexistent for those with disabilities. In partnership with HAGI TV Bingo, we allow many disabled individuals to enjoy the outdoors through fully and partially subsidized camping stays. This includes travel to and from the Centre, fully accessible accommodations, and a variety of activities that allow those with disabilities to participate.
