Secretary
Ulysses Patola
Ulysses Patola has been involved with HAGI for several years. He did his PhD dissertation, entitled “‘Get the Disabled Out of Their Closets’: Disability Activism in the City of Thunder Bay, and Northwestern Ontario, 1972-1990s.” As part of his dissertation, Ulysses interviewed many of the early founders of the HAGI and performed extensive archival research on the organization. Ulysses’ research demonstrated that by the early 1990s, the HAGI had set up a ‘working accessible’ community in the City of Thunder Bay in the areas of accessible housing, transportation, sports/recreation, and barrier-free design.
In the summer of 2015, Ulysses was also a summer student at the HAGI. At the time, Ulysses helped with the integration of the Kenora region’s Northwest Independent Living Services and the HAGI. Further, Ulysses revived the HAGI’s newsletter the Spoke N Wheel.
Ulysses sits on the HAGI Wilderness Advisory Committee and the HAGI BOD as vice-president. Ulysses is passionate about bringing more accessible housing to Thunder Bay.
Ulysses has completed an HBA, BEd, MA, and PhD. As of the spring of 2022, Ulysses completed his JD at the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law and accepted employment at a local law firm. He brings disability law and human rights expertise to the HAGI.
